Upcoming Premium Hatchback Cars in India

Though the fiscal year 2013-14 was the worst year of the past decade for the Indian automobile industry, FY 2014-15 managed to help revive sales in the market. That said, it was still a moderate financial year for carmakers. However, carmakers in the country are not one to be bogged down and have been readying new products for 2015. We’ll see several all-new cars entering segments across the automobile industry this year.

From all the new entrants this year, we put together a list of the upcoming premium hatchbacks in India.

1. Honda Jazz

To keep the momentum going this year, Honda will bring back the Jazz nameplate. The hatchback will not only get an all-new design, but also a diesel engine, which it lacked the last time it was in the market. It suffices to say that the new Honda Jazz looks quite promising.

The new-generation of the Jazz will, hopefully, get the same engines as the ones that power the Amaze i.e. the 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol and the 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel. Moreover, it may also get an even more powerful version with the 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine – though some time later.

Honda has already started its production in India, and we expect it to be launched by the mid of the current calendar year.

Expected Price – Rs. 4.5 lakh – Rs. 8 lakh

Expected Launch – Mid-2015

2. Maruti Suzuki YRA

Suzuki unveiled iK-2 aka YRA premium hatchback at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show – it gets a new 1.0-litre, direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine that is based on the Suzuki’s 1.0-litre K-series engine that also powers the Alto and the WagonR.

The company claims to have improved the motor’s fuel-efficiency by reducing engine displacement. Its performance also gets a hike, thanks to a turbocharger. The diesel engine, on the other hand, could be the same 1.3-litre Multijet unit that also powers the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.

Expected Price – Rs. 5.5 lakh – Rs. 9 lakh

Expected Launch – Festive season

3. Ford Figo

New Ford Figo

In terms of design, the new Figo hatchback will get a honeycomb grille, the signature Ford front-end, and head-lights with different mirror element, though the overall design remains unchanged from the concept. Ford has already launched the hatchback in Brazil, and will bring it to India this year. As far the Ford Figo’s engine options are concerned, it might continue to be powered by the existing engine options, i.e. the 1.4-litre diesel and both, the 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre petrol in India.

Expected Price – Rs. 4.5 lakh – Rs. 7 lakh

Expected Launch – Early 2016

500 Abarth, Fiat’s performance-oriented hatchback will take on the likes of BMW 1 Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, and Volvo V40 Cross Country among others upon its arrival in the country. It will be powered by a 1.4-litre MultiAir turbocharged petrol unit that develops a whooping 135bhp. Furthermore, Fiat could also bring in the high-end ‘Essess’ model that gets a motor with a power output of 161bhp.

It will come paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox that sends power to the front wheels of the car. This version will also get newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels.
