It’s badged as an Acura, and we’re told the drivetrain is a development of the four-motor package that was fitted to a CR-Z prototype for last year’s Pikes race. That CR-Z don’t forget, scored a win with a time of 10m 23.829s in the ‘Exhibition’ class.
This new car then, isn’t really an NSX, but wears that ‘experimental’ four-motor drivetrain, with the NSX body on top. And though Honda hasn’t revealed power figures or much in the way of technical information, we’re assured the new electric setup – featuring twin motors on each axle – is three times more powerful than the one fitted to last year’s CR-Z.
Honda has also learnt from last year’s race, and updated the powertrain management for “more precise thrust at each wheel”. A proven package then, for the 156 “complex corners the driver will encounter on the drive up Pikes Peak”.
Ah yes, the driver. More than the drivetrain is carried over for 2016: Tetsuya Yamano – the one who raced the CR-Z up the mountain last year – will return to pilot this NSX prototype.
“We’ve been tuning the car for several weeks at Pikes and have advanced its performance significantly,” says Yamano. “We’re honoured to be running at Pikes in this historical, anniversary year – an event respected by racing fans all over the world.”
