Honda hit the old drawing board and produced a 2016 Civic that has been redesigned—longer (three-inches), wider (2-inches), lighter (down 68 pounds), real easy on the eye, as a matter of fact, even better, it’s on fleek! The tenth generation Civic has been totally resuscitated and it is shaking up the compact class in a huge way!
The latest Civic has just the right look and right stance–sleek with a kind of fastback roofline that slopes down towards the rear (but does not interfere with your head room), hard angular lines, new chrome grille bar, flared wheel arches and exaggerated C-shaped tail lights. Inside the Honda staple are quite a bit of improvements–clean aesthetics and high-grade materials all around, nothing is overdone. The cabin is well proportioned, pretty much one-size-fits-all and child safety seat-friendly. The sedan for five has ample head and legroom all around. The seats are well bolstered and back comforting. The sliding center console is softly padded and easy on the elbows. And speaking of the Civics’ center console, there is storage underneath it that is roomy enough to swallow a large purse, a couple of iPads or other “let-me-keep-out-of-site” stuff. Comfy enough for road trips, the Civic, according to Honda is as spacious as it gets class-wise. As far as technology, the Civic offers a standard 7-inch touchscreen in all trims but the base LX. The screen offers decent resolution, response time and supports the latest Apple CarPlay and Android Auto systems. The dash controls are decently placed and within an arm’s reach. The Civics’ trunk is a well-dimensioned super plus for a compact, an entire 15.1 cubes enough to satisfy any hoard-ish family (the Touring trim has a smaller trunk because of its sound system).
Getting behind the wheel of a Civic is just a pleasant and even fun experience. The tilt/telescopic steering wheel has a really good feel to it and driver visibility is absolutely noteworthy. The sedan is a breeze to pilot, gets up to speed easily, and handles better than many of its competitors. The Civic is engaging which is a fancier word for sporty, it’s firm suspension allows it to exhibit real true road carving prowess. The vehicle also soaks up those annoying road thumps like a champ and has a pin-drop quiet cabin to boot. The front-wheel-drive 2016 Honda Civic comes with a four-cylinder engine, but the exact type varies depending on the trim level you pick. There are five trim lines—LX, EX, EX-T, EX-L and Touring. The EX trim (test vehicle) comes in a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque and its EPA guesstimated fuel economy stands at a not too shabby 31 city/42 highway.
The Japanese automaker has produced cars over the years with bulletproof reliability and is forever placing an emphasis on safety. The Civic quite naturally is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ and is equipped with such standards as stability control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a rearview camera. Starting with the EX, LaneWatch, a right-side blind spot camera is standard, as is the HondaLink system, which also includes emergency crash notification. For about $1,000 more, the optional Honda Sensing suite offers a safety net of necessary extras like adaptive cruise control, lane departure and forward collision warnings, lane keeping assist system, Collision Mitigation Braking System and Road Departure Mitigation System.
It seems Honda has hit the bullseye with its 2016 Civic–edgy, upscale looking, a crisp road performer and a definite draw. The Civic is certainly on fleek and should be added to any family’s consideration list.
