Report – Acura NSX Type R could feature rear wheel drive image

The rumor mill has been trigger happy when it comes to the hardcore version of the Acura NSX hybrid supercar, with the Type R version rumored over and over – and now we finally have some new details to share.

Nick Robinson, the NSX Dynamic Development Leader, has tipped about the automaker’s ongoing debate whether to produce the NSX Type R, though the mass of people aiming to get the project greenlit is reportedly growing. The regular version of the NSX is using a three-electric motors and biturbo V6 engine assembly – while the NSX Type R could do without two of the electric motors and opt for a rear wheel drive layout. This is actually integrated even inside the standard model with Robinson confirming the NSX uses a “maintenance mode” which can deactivate the electric assist motors and even the anti-lock braking system. And with that mode activated the NSX is actually an unleashed “drift machine.”

We also heard that Acura will be making the trip to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and showcase there a couple of NSX models – one of them will go without the hybrid powertrain in favor of an upgraded biturbo 3.5-liter V6 engine which has been fitted with electric superchargers. In this mode the version will be able to unleash significantly more than 500 horsepower. Robinson also ceded to the rumor that tips a possible convertible version of the NSX – the manager said he’s no fan of the body type but the idea is entirely “possible”.
