At the 2015 New York Auto Show earlier this month, Honda rolled out a striking coupe concept that previews the design of an all-new Civic set to be introduced for the 2016 model year. At the concept’s unveiling, Honda also confirmed that the 2016 Civic will be available as a coupe, hatch and sedan, and that the hatch will come in Type R flavor.
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past 12 months, the Honda Civic Type R is a high-performance version of the five-door Civic hatch that’s coming our way for the 2016 model year. The vehicle packs a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with VTEC variable valve timing, and thanks to a 305-horsepower rating the car recently set the Nürburgring lap record for front-wheel-drive cars.
But what if Honda took the hardware of the hatch-based Civic Type R and plugged it into the upcoming 2016 Civic Coupe. Well, you no longer need to imagine what the vehicle will look like as the guys at enthusiast website CivicX commissioned a computer-generated rendering of just such a vehicle from digital artist Wild-Speed, and the results are rather impressive we must admit.
While it’s unlikely Honda will develop a Civic Coupe Type R, performance fans can look forward to an Si variant. And the new Si won’t be like the current lame-duck model as it’s expected to pack a turbocharged VTEC engine.
