Paris LIVE: Honda Civic Type R Prototype
Honda announced its new Civic Type-R Wednesday, officially confirming what we basically already knew: The new Type-R will be offered in worldwide markets.
Officially, this is just a prototype, but Honda is famous for concept cars that are essentially production-ready designs. For that reason, we expect the new 340-horsepower sport compact to look a lot like this when it enters production.
And there’s a lot of “this” to talk about. The Type-R prototype features an aggressive black-and-red theme, with smoked front features contrasting with eye-grabbing accents just about everywhere you look.
Up front, the headlights are surrounded by gloss-black trim that runs the entire width of the fascia. Dead center is a red-and-silver Honda emblem; a red-accented “Type-R” badge resides in the driver’s side of the grille.
A carbon fiber front lip spoiler with a red accent ends at the front fender but this theme is picked up again just aft of the wheel wells by rocker accents that run the full profile of the hatch. Aft of the rear wheels, this is completed with an aggressive diffuser.
Smack in the middle of that rear treatment is a rather eye-catching exhaust finisher. The tri-tip arrangement is nothing if not unique. Whether that particular element will make it to production is somewhat questionable.
Honda says this generation represents the “[…]most ambitious, sportiest Civic lineup ever[.]” We like what we’ve seen so far and we have high expectations for the Si and Type-R variants of Honda’s compact.
