Mini Clubman, Honda Ridgeline, Hyundai Elantra Star in Super Bowl Ads

Ridgeline Commercial Screencap

It’s Super Bowl season, and that means we get a slew of fresh, high-quality advertisements from automakers. Acura was one of the first out of the gate with an ad centered on the new NSX supercar. Now, Mini and Honda released their own Super Bowl spots ahead of the big game.

2016 Mini Clubman: “Defy Labels”

To help shatter some long-standing prejudiced labels some people have against Mini, the automaker recruited a team of superstars, including Tony Hawk, Serena Williams, Abby Wambach, Harvey Keitel, and T-Pain. Each star presents a perceived label, including Mini being seen as a “chick” car or a car best driven by shorter people. As the stars go through the list, the commercial ends with a message of “Defy Labels” and a shot of the new 2016 Mini Clubman.

2017 Honda Ridgeline: “A New Truck to Love”

The new 2017 Honda Ridgeline commercial is more lighthearted. To illustrate special features found on the Ridgeline, including a dual-action tailgate and integrated speakers in the bed, Honda uses a field of rather gifted sheep, who break into a rendition of “Somebody to Love” by Queen. This commercial follows close after the Ridgeline’s recent debut at the 2016 Detroit auto show. The Ridgeline enters to the crowded midsize truck segment with unibody construction, a front- or all-wheel-drive drivetrain, and a 3.5-liter V-6 engine.

2017 Hyundai Elantra: “Ryanville”

Hyundai recruited actor and all-around hunk Ryan Reynolds to star in a commercial for the new Elantra. In the ad, two women are enraptured by Ryanville, a town apparently inhabited entirely by different variations of Ryan Reynolds. The pair is so distracted, the Elantra engages pre-collision braking to prevent a wreck with a dog-walking Ryan.
