Mid-engined Mystery Honda Appears: S2000 Successor On The Horizon?

Could these new renderings be our first look at the long-rumoured successor to Honda’s S2000 sports car?

For months now, the Honda name has been attached to reports of a new two-door sports car that would slot in between the tiny new S660 and the hero NSX revealed in its final form earlier this year.

This time last year, reports out of Europe suggested the S2000 badge would return in the near future, gracing the rump of a roofed and more powerful model.

These mysterious new images, released today by the US Patent Office, might be our first authentic clue that such a model is in the works.

The renderings hint at another mid-engined design, joining the S660 and NSX in adopting that layout – and setting it well apart from the front-engined configuration of the S2000.

This means that, while the hero NSX does its part in battling the likes of Audi’s new R8, a new mid-engined S2000 would be aimed at the Porsche Cayman.

Reports have pointed to a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine as the new coupe’s main source of motivation – likely the same mill driving the new Civic Type R – while a pair of NSX-inspired electric motors would add extra power and all-paw traction.

Watch for news on this one to develop over the year ahead.
