The Chinese patent bureau is apparently holding the specs of the next generation Freed people carrier, which should be ready for the whole world to see come September.

The current generation has been introduced way back in 2008, so it’s high time the Japanese produced the next generation iteration. The newest reports on the matter are tipping us to a home market introduction in August, followed by a wider reveal in September. But we’re now seeing the early design of the model thanks to these very revealing digital reproductions – and as we can see this is a regular people carrier. On the other hand, compared to the model it replaces – based on the Jazz/Fit series – the new generation Freed will be 35 mm longer (at 4,250 mm), 5 mm taller (at 1,710 mm) and carry the same 1,695 mm width. Of course we imagine the current wheelbase of 2,740 mm will also be extended, allowing for a roomier interior – a main asset in the segment.

Apparently the naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter gasoline engine will carry over, but will be seconded by a turbocharged three-cylinder, 1.0-liter unit coming from the European Civic. Also on tow is a hybrid variant, mating the 1.5-liter with an electric motor, a lithium-ion battery, and a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission. The first generation Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system will also get replaced by the newer Intelligent Dual-Clutch Drive (i-DCD) – and by the way, the current generation Freed can be had as a five seater, a seven-seater with second-row captain’s seats, and also as an eight-seater.
