Refunds to begin Thursday, Honda says

Honda Financial Services scrambled Wednesday to identify and repair a payment processing glitch on its website and servers that significantly overcharged consumers.

Some customers took to social media to report they were charged double on vehicle payments, and many were charged overdraft fees.

Honda said late Wednesday that it had identified customers affected by the glitch and that refunds would be issued beginning Thursday. Fees would also be waived or refunded, Honda said, adding it would provide assistance for customers with “credit concerns” stemming from the error.

A company post on Honda Financial’s Facebook page said high call volume has “overwhelmed the system.” Honda said later that callers were on hold an average of 20 to 30 minutes.

American Honda Motor Co. spokesman Sage Marie said Honda’s captive finance arm faced a processing error on that affected some customers.

“We understand the urgency and the impact on our customers. Customers are our top priority,” Marie said. “We have a team working feverishly on it. We’ll update our customers as more information becomes available.”
