In an interview with the UK’s Auto Express, NSX project boss Ted Klaus said the NSX should continue to evolve, and that hotter variants could be on the cards for the future.
“I think everyone who loves cars wants to see a version that we say is ‘pure red’,” Klaus said. “The NSX has always been silver first, moving towards red later. Someone asked me, ‘when will you be satisfied?’ Probably never. What you do today, you can improve on tomorrow.”
“Pure red” is a reference to Honda’s R performance models, which wear red trim highlights to differentiate them from ‘regular’ variants.
Klaus said the NSX would “continue to improve performance and styling”, hinting at both the return of the NSX-R as seen with the original NSX from the 1990s and a convertible version down the track.
As the name suggests, the NSX-R turned the performance wick up to 11 in the original model, with track-focused modifications to suspension, weight and interior trim.
For the current model, changes worthy of the ‘R’ name would mean a reduction in the NSX’s 1730kg weight and perhaps an increase in power from the standard petrol-electric hybrid setup which offers 337kW and 550Nm.
The 0-100km/h time could be trimmed below the 3.0 second barrier, and the top speed should easily exceed 300km/h.
