Honda Has Awesome Plans For This Year’s Pikes Peak Hill Climb

Look for two NSX racers and a new EV concept.

Honda always has a few tricks up its sleeves when it comes to Pikes Peak entries. Last year, Acura ran a 2017 NSX prototype for pace-car duty and fitted the supercar with 24 cameras to give enthusiasts a 360-degree video of the hill climb. For this year, the Japanese automaker plans to sprint up the hill climb with two NSX supercars, along with a reconfigured model of the brand’s four-motor electric racecar. The 2016 cars have not been revealed yet, but one of the cars will be in the Time Attack 2 Production class.

The Time Attack 2 Production class is comprised of vehicles that are mostly stock, but have things like a roll cage, while the other supercar will be in Time Attack 1. The Time Attack 1 class allows automakers and enthusiasts alike to modify the car’s powertrain, suspension and aerodynamic qualities. So expect one of the cars to have a lot more power and a massive wing on the back. Nick and James Robinson, who are brothers that work for Honda R&D in Ohio, will drive the cars. Honda also plans to use a version of the four-motor electric powertrain from its 2015 CR-Z Exhibition class entry in a new electric vehicle. The 2016 model will have a different body and be entered in the Electric Modified class.

As the CR-Z took 11th place overall in 2015, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the car attempt to take the overall win. Tetsuya Yamano, a Japanese Super GT driver, will once again pilot the car. Honda has run some pretty cool cars at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb before and we expect some pretty cool things this year. The 2016 race marks the Pikes Peak hill climb’s 100th anniversary, so be on the lookout for some radical cars.
