Honda is expected to announce its entry into the Red Bull Global Rallycross Series.
Currently Ford, Volkswagen and Subaru all compete in the sport as major automotive partners, while Chevrolet, Citroen and Hyundai also compete on a limited basis. Rumor has it that Honda will build its own cars rather than renting or using cars from existing teams.
Autoweek reports that the announcement will come either at the Chicago or New York Auto Show.
In October 2015, the Japanese automaker confirmed to SportsBusiness Journal that American Honda and Honda Performance Development (HPD) were investigating a possible entry into GRC this year. The statement came from American Honda’s motorsports public relations manager, T.E. McHale, who also added “We don’t really have anything further to announce at this time, as all of the necessary approvals for the project haven’t yet been received from AHM upper management.”
If Honda does commit to GRC, it is likely looking at a $10 to $15 million total commitment over three years, sources told SportsBusiness Journal. One team that is high on the list of possiblities to carry the Honda banner is Bryan Herta Autosport, which currently races Ford in GRC but competes in the IndyCar Series with Honda.
