Honda fans, rejoice: the turbocharged Honda Civic Type R hot hatch will be coming to the U.S. market. The exciting announcement came as Honda showed the 2016 Honda Civic Concept at the 2015 New York auto show and announced lots of news about the future of the Civic lineup. We’d lusted over the 305-hp Type R ever since its debut at the Geneva auto show earlier this year, but had given up hope on its chances for America since the European-market hatchback is not sold here. Now, as part of an effort to globalize the Civic lineup, Honda says it will bring the five-door Civic hatchback on which the Type R is based to the U.S. market, meaning that the hot hatch will join the lineup on our shores.

The Honda Civic Type R hatchback uses a 305-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged VTEC four-cylinder that powers the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. We think it’s likely that this powertrain will continue on mostly unchanged for the U.S., and the Type R’s adaptive suspension system should remain as well. All of this performance potential combined earlier this year to set a blistering lap time of 7 minutes, 50 seconds on the challenging Nürburgring racetrack, beating the previous front-wheel-drive production lap record, not to mention more powerful sports cars. We don’t have specific details yet on timing for the Honda Civic Type R’s arrival in the U.S., but stay tuned for more information on this exciting addition to the Civic lineup.
