According to NSX Dynamic Development Leader Nick Robinson, Acura hasn’t officially approved an NSX Type R but a number of people are pushing for the project to be green-lighted.
The standard model has three-electric motors and a biturbo V6 engine but Autocar is reporting the NSX Type R could ditch two of the electric motors and become rear-wheel drive. This isn’t unheard of as Robinson confirmed the NSX has a “maintenance mode” which deactivates the electric motors and the anti-lock braking system. He went on to say this turns the car into a real “drift machine.”
Most interestingly, Acura will be bringing two NSXs to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. One of them will eschew the hybrid powertain for an upgraded biturbo 3.5-liter V6 engine which has been equipped with electric superchargers. This will enable the model to produce significantly more than 500 horsepower.
In related news, Robinson confirmed the company will likely offer a convertible variant sometime in the future. He’s not a fan of the idea but he concedes “it’s possible.”
