2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell US Spec to be displayed in New York

Honda has revealed it has plans to show the 2017 Clarity Fuel Cell in U.S. configuration later this week on the occasion of the 2016 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS).

The hydrogen-powered sedan originally made its debut back in October at the Tokyo Motor Show and most likely it will look virtually the same in U.S. specification. Compared to the outging FCX Clarity, the new generation’s fuel stack is 33% more compact and at the same time brings a massive 60% boost in power density.

Thanks to the re-engineering, the fuel cell and the powertrain are now comparable in size to a conventional V6 engine, so now the hardware fits under the hood. As a consequence, this has enabled a more spacious interior cabin where there is enough room for five people. The 2017 Clarity will come with an eight-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system which will have support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

In U.S. guise, the 2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell will have an anticipated EPA driving range of more than 300 miles (482 kilometers) and will need 3-5 minutes for a complete refill.

On the safety front, the latest Honda Sensing has a multitude of sensors necessary for a variety of technologies, such as Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Warning. Moreover, the 2017 Clarity will have support for Adaptive Cruise Control as well as Road Departure Mitigation and Collision Mitigation Braking System (with emergency braking).

Retail leasing to customers is scheduled to begin before the end of the year in California. Honda says the model will cost somewhere in the region of $60,000 and will have a “targeted” monthly lease of less than $500.

As a final note, Honda mentions it’s working on a new plug-in hybrid based on the same platform as the Clarity Fuel Cell. It’s slated to go on sale in 2018 when the company will also introduce a new battery electric vehicle.
