After many, many years of waiting, the new Acura NSX is almost upon us. Acura is as excited as we are, and to generate buzz, the Japanese automaker released its upcoming NSX commercial bound for this year’s Super Bowl. In the new TV spot, we are treated to an assortment of vocals from Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth, with Van Halen-esque outbursts overlaid against a series of artsy scenes of dramatized creation of NSX components. As the car begins to take shape, Roth’s voice erupts into the intro of Van Halen’s famous “Runnin’ with the Devil.” This isn’t the first time the Acura NSX has filled the gaps in the Super Bowl. Back in 2012, we saw a preproduction NSX concept as the subject of Jerry Seinfeld’s desire. It’s not hard to see why Acura is making such a big deal about its new supercar. The new NSX is the return of a widely beloved nameplate, with a much-maligned development process that spans nearly 9 years. With a hybridized mid-engine powertrain, the new NSX offers technology pioneered by the hybrid hypercar trio from McLaren, Ferrari, and Porsche, in an affordable package. A mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine, paired with three electric motors, sends a total of 573 hp to all four wheels through a special seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Performance is staggering, with a 0-60 time in the low three-second range, and a top speed of 191 mph. The car quickly impressed us when we drove it late last year: “The NSX’s approach is a surprising one, and some will knock its philosophy. But the 2017 Acura NSX isn’t soft rock. More like a power ballad,” we wrote. Prospective customers can’t place orders for the 2017 Acura NSX, which starts at $157,800, until February 25.
