Comic-Con has kicked off for 2016 and, needless to say, things there are pretty wild. This year just happens to mark the 25th anniversary of Sega’s legendary blue hedgehog, Sonic, and the game that has always been a flagship for Sega. And, believe it or not, it’s all about the fast-footed hedgehog we’ve all grown to love.
James Jenkins, Honda’s Public Relations Manager, said, “What better way to showcase the incredibly sporty performance capability of the 10th generation Civic than by pairing it with gaming industry’s ultimate athlete – Sonic the Hedgehog. As the fan favorite game and character celebrates his 25th anniversary on the scene, we hope that all Sonic fans – those who remember playing years ago and those who continue playing today – rejoice in his all-new ride, as much as we enjoyed creating it.”
The special-edition model is based on the 10th-generation, 2016 Honda Civic Touring Sedan and features a number of special design cues that pay tribute to Sonic himself. As such, the car comes standard with a number of features from Honda, like a fuel efficient engine, plenty of safety and driver assistant technology, and an infotainment system that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, among other things. So, with that said, let’s take a good look at the Sonic Civic and what went into making the car that pays perfect tribute to Sega’s flagship character.
Why The Sonic Civic Is So Special
Honda “Sonic the Hedgehog” Civic
Surprisingly, Honda didn’t throw any type of body kit on the Sonic Civic, but that’s okay because there’s a lot of other stuff going on here. First off, the body is finished in a bespoke paint scheme that includes BASF R-M Candy Sonic Blue. Furthermore, the front grille is finished in Sonic Black, and there is Sonic Yellow accenting the lower extremities of this special Civic. The Honda logo has also been finished in Sonic Yellow to add a little extra flare to the exterior package. The custom Vinyl wrap applied to the body speaks for itself, featuring Sonic himself and the rings that he is addicted to collecting.
The wheels also take on a special appearance that integrates with the Vinyl wrap in a way that we’ve never seen before. The rear wheels are painted white with a red outline, symbolizing Sonic’s red shoes (think of how he looks when his legs a spooling up for take off), and the front wheels are painted sonic yellow as a symbolization of the gold rings. Honda didn’t make any reference to the suspension or drivetrain system, but looking at the car, you can clearly tell that it the suspension has been lowered.
Honda “Sonic the Hedgehog” Civic
Even though the exterior modifications would have been more than enough to pay tribute to Sonic, Honda didn’t stop there. Inside, the front and rear seats have been wrapped in Katzkin Blue Leather with custom “Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary” embroidery. The trunk area also received extensive modification, featuring two 500-watt Rockford Fosgate T1S2 10-inch subwoofers that are powered by two Fosgate 400-watt amplifiers. There is a floor-mounted, flip-up 32-inch television that will allow fans to play – you guessed it – Sonic the Hedgehog.
All told, the Sonic Civic is a pretty cool car, and it should fit in perfect when it debuts at Sega’s sold-out anniversary event at Comic-Con. The only thing I think the car is really missing is a playable version of the game on the built-in infotainment display, but we’ll let Honda slide on that one since there is a 32-inch display in the trunk. Well done, Honda; well done.
