2016 Honda Civic Coupe Confirmed For Los Angeles Auto Show

Honda’s all-new, 10th-generation Civic Sedan has just gone on sale and will soon be joined by its coupe counterpart. Honda confirmed that the new Civic Coupe, which arrives as a 2016 model, will be unveiled next week at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.

We don’t have to wait until then to see the new design, however, as patent drawings for the car have previously surfaced online. They show that the overall design including the lights and character lines are virtually identical to what you see on the sedan.

Both cars share a platform that brings weight savings and improvements in torsional rigidity, ensuring that the 10th-generation Civic models are far superior to the predecessor models when it comes to driving dynamics. The suspension is also completely new, with redesigned MacPherson struts up front and a new multi-link rear setup mounted to a rigid rear subframe.

Expect the powertrains to also be common to both. No specs for the new Civic Coupe were revealed but for the 2016 model year the sedan comes standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder delivering 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque in base trim and a turbocharged 1.5-liter four with 174 hp and 163 lb-ft for those seeking more oomph. Eventually, we should see another generation of the Civic Si Coupe and perhaps even a Civic Type R Coupe at some point. At present we only know of a Civic Type R hatchback in the works but we’ve got our fingers crossed for more bodystyles.

Joining the new Civic Coupe on Honda’s stand at the L.A. Auto Show will be the 2017 Clarity Fuel Cell. The car, which made its debut at the recent Tokyo Motor Show, has 174 hp on tap and should be capable of driving more than 300 miles on a fill of its hydrogen tanks. It goes on sale next year.

The action in L.A. all gets underway November 18. In the meantime, see what else will be present by visiting our dedicated hub.
