2015-2016 Honda Fit Recalled For Airbag Problem (And It’s Not Takata’s Fault)

Honda has issued a recall for select 2015 and 2016 models of the Honda Fit. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the side-curtain airbags on some of those vehicles may rip upon deployment, increasing the risk of injury to occupants.

If you keep up with the auto news, you might read the above paragraph and jump to the conclusion that the problem is related to Takata’s fatally flawed airbags. After all, until recently, Honda had been Tataka’s biggest client. 

But the Fit‘s problem isn’t the airbags themselves. It’s the rear grab handle brackets, which were made by Mexico’s Unipres Mexicana. NHTSA says that those components were improperly manufactured, which means that they may puncture the Fit’s side curtain airbags during deployment. Should that happen, they would provide less protection to passengers during an accident.

The recall is limited to 2015-2016 Honda Fit vehicles with the LX trim that were built between April 11, 2014 and July 02, 2015. The recall doesn’t affect any vehicle equipped with a sunroof.

Honda says that 25,367 vehicles are affected by the recall. The automaker notes that it knows of no injuries related to the problem, which was discovered during internal safety tests.

Honda will mail recall notices to Fit owners no later than December 4, 2015. After receiving those notices, owners will be able to take their vehicles to Honda dealers, who will replace the rear grab handle brackets at no charge.
